Leaked: EU’s pledge for global climate deal [#Paris2015]

On Wednesday 25 February, the European Commission will present its EU Energy Union package. The package consists of:

  • EU Energy Union Framework Strategy
  • EU Energy Union Roadmap
  • Electricity interconnection communication
  • Paris Protocol – a blueprint for tackling global climate change beyond 2020

The draft Paris Protocol, which includes EU’s climate pledge for the UN climate talks in Paris, december 2015, was leaked to me.

The EU’s climate pledge is: ‘Achieving at least 40% domestic reduction in [GHG] emissions in 2030 by gradually increasing reduction level over the period beyond the existing reduction target of 20% for 2020.’

The EU furthermore calls for a global long term goal: ‘to reduce global emissions by at least 60 % below 2010 levels by 2050‘.
